Why People Believe Weird Things

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Michael Shermer, founder of the Skeptics Society, offers in this book an intelligent and provocative exploration of the psychological and cultural mechanisms that lead us to believe in pseudoscientific ideas, superstitions, and unfounded theories. With a clear style and plenty of examples, the author combines historical analysis with critical reflection to show how even the most rational minds can fall into the trap of “weird things.”

One of the book’s strengths lies in its ability to communicate complex concepts without oversimplification, while raising unsettling questions that provoke thought. Shermer’s insistence on the importance of critical thinking and active skepticism is especially relevant in an age of information overload and fake news.

Nevertheless, the book suffers from some imbalance in certain chapters. In particular, the section devoted to Holocaust denial is long and detailed to the point of shifting the book’s overall focus. Although the subject is important and rigorously treated, its length may lead the reader to perceive a lack of balance compared to the other, shorter examples.

Overall, Why People Believe Weird Things is a valuable and thought-provoking essay that encourages us to question our beliefs and better understand the fragility of human thinking. Despite its minor imbalances, it is a recommended read for anyone interested in the boundary between science and pseudoscience.

Cover

The cover of this edition is both fitting and ironic. The orange hand drawing, evoking palmistry or magical hands, contrasts with the serious tone of the subtitle, creating an attractive visual effect. At the bottom, the humorous reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s fresco featuring the Flying Spaghetti Monster instead of God is a brilliant touch: it conveys to the reader, at first glance, that the book deals with surprising beliefs approached with critical spirit and a dose of sarcasm. The design combines seriousness and irony in a balanced way, making the cover not only eye-catching but also consistent with the book’s content.
