Spina, by Quim Gómez, is a science-fiction novel set in Barcelona in 2059. Off the coast of the Catalan capital rises Neo Icària, an island-state that becomes the perfect setting to explore the limits of power, identity, and human evolution. The novel is structured around three independent stories that ultimately come together skillfully in a very satisfying final section. The concept of the Spina, a neural implant capable of granting new abilities, serves as the common thread and gives cohesion to the entire narrative. This is a fast-paced, imaginative book filled with interesting ideas about the technological and social future. And the names chosen for the characters are quite curious… I’ll say no more.
The novel is a quick read, and the only criticism one could make is that it leaves you wanting more.
