EL MECANISME

(The Mechanism)

ArTicLes:

From King Kong to Einstein. Physics in Science Fiction.

Rating: ★★★★☆

This book is an exciting invitation to explore the frontier between science and imagination. Manuel Moreno Lupiáñez and Jordi José achieve a well-balanced combination of scientific rigor and engaging divulgation, using science fiction as a springboard to explain complex concepts of physics. From giant monsters like King Kong to time travel and Einstein’s relativity paradoxes, each chapter manages to keep the reader engaged while offering solid knowledge.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its clarity of exposition: the authors never fall into excessive academicism but explain science in a close, accessible language, with constant cultural references that make the reading both instructive and entertaining. Moreover, the inclusion of illustrations by Vicent Ribas adds extra value, making the experience more visual and appealing.

As a minor weakness, some readers may feel that the focus on certain films or common science fiction tropes leaves less room for other equally interesting works. Even so, the selection works very well for the book’s objectives: to disseminate, surprise, and inspire reflection.

In short, From King Kong to Einstein is an excellent book for anyone who wants to better understand how physics permeates the stories that have made us dream. An enriching read, recommended for both students and curious minds as well as lovers of fantastic cinema.

A successful blend of science and fiction, able to teach and entertain at once.

Cover

The cover, designed by Manuel Andreu and Jorge Calvet, is a magnificent visual synthesis of the book’s spirit. The silhouette of an imposing King Kong confronting a plane against the background of a skyscraper immediately evokes the link between science fiction and collective imagination. The design plays with simplicity and contrast, transmitting dynamism and a hint of irony that invites readers to approach the text with curiosity. Altogether, it is a suggestive and fitting cover that perfectly complements the content of the work.
